The 2025 Season 4 build didn’t just tweak the Gen4 NASCAR car — it transformed the way drafting works. With the new aero model introducing stronger sidedrafts, a more realistic “air bubble,” and harsher penalties for losing the pack, survival at superspeedways now requires a whole new playbook.

Here are some key tips to help you thrive in the updated Gen4 draft.

1. Respect the Sidedraft

The sidedraft is now more powerful — and more dangerous. Use it wisely:

On offense: Slide alongside a rival’s rear quarter panel to slow them down and give yourself a run.

On defense: Expect others to do it to you. Anticipate the drag and adjust your line so you don’t get freight-trained.

Don’t overdo it: Staying locked on someone’s quarter too long can stall your momentum, too.

2. Don’t Lose the Pack

Falling out of line used to be recoverable — now, it’s often a race-ender.

Stay tucked in whenever possible.

If you get shuffled out, look for a hole quickly — don’t wait for the draft to “pull you back in.”

Watch fuel strategy. Running in clean air can burn more gas, so balancing pack position with pit windows matters.

3. Manage the Bubble

There’s now a clearer sense of airflow between cars. Think of it as invisible real estate:

Get too close to the wrong spot on another car and you’ll lose momentum.

Conversely, hit the sweet spot and you’ll feel the tow pull you forward.

Practice finding that invisible bubble in testing sessions — knowing how close is too close is the new skill gap.

4. Work the Lanes

Multi-lane racing is more alive than ever.

The inside line still provides track position, but the outside lane can generate big runs with smart drafting.

Middle lanes are risky but can move forward if coordinated.

Don’t just ride — be proactive in choosing the lane with momentum.

5. Adapt Your Mentality

The old Gen4 model let drivers sit and ride until the final laps. Not anymore. Now:

Positioning matters earlier. If you’re not in the top 10 with 10 laps to go, your chances shrink.

Draft partners are key. Communicate in leagues or official races — solo runs are harder to make stick.

Expect chaos. The new model creates more lead changes and more aggressive moves. Be ready for sudden shifts in pack dynamics.

The Gen4 update rewards racecraft. It’s not enough to draft blindly or camp out in line until the white flag. The best drivers will be those who can balance aggression with awareness, knowing when to use the sidedraft, how to protect momentum, and how to stay glued to the pack.

Survive the learning curve, and you’ll find that this is the most exciting Gen4 racing iRacing has ever offered.

When iRacing’s 2025 Season 4 build dropped, the biggest headlines focused on flashy new cars like the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 EVO and Dallara IL-15. But tucked into the release notes was a change that could reshape the way superspeedway racing feels in the sim: a major overhaul of the Gen4 NASCAR drafting model.

It doesn’t look dramatic in screenshots, but on track? It’s a different world.

What’s New Under the Hood

iRacing’s release notes describe the update simply as “extensive adjustments to drafting parameters for the NASCAR Gen4 car.” That’s understated. What drivers are finding is a much more nuanced aerodynamic model:

Sidedraft is alive and well. Pull alongside another car’s rear quarter panel and you’ll feel it — your car drags theirs back while gaining momentum yourself. It’s no longer just a visual trick; it works like it did in the real Gen4 era.

The air bubble matters. There’s now a clearer sense of “clean air” vs. “dirty air.” Get out of line or lose the pack, and the hole in the air your car punches won’t do you any favors.

Dynamic packs. Gone are the days of stagnant two- and three-lane trains. The new drafting model encourages fluid movement, side-by-side shuffling, and actual passing opportunities.

How It Feels to Drive

Drivers are reporting a very different pack-racing experience. Some key takeaways:

Lose the draft, pay the price. Falling out of line now means it’s much harder to claw back to the pack.

Battling for air matters. Positioning on the track — not just raw speed — determines whether you move forward or get freight-trained.

Closer to real life? Opinions differ. Some say the sidedraft feels a touch too strong compared to the real-world Gen4 cars. Others think it finally nails the balance between speed and strategy.

One thing is certain: you’ll need to relearn the art of pack racing. No more “easy ride in line” until the last lap — this update forces you to fight for clean air and defend your spot.

Why It Matters

The Gen4 car is a fan favorite in iRacing, serving as a nostalgic callback to an era of NASCAR that many sim racers grew up watching. Updating its drafting model does more than improve immersion — it keeps the car relevant for serious superspeedway racing and league events.

The new model also borrows from iRacing’s work on the Next Gen Cup car, where airflow, aero wake, and sidedraft play a huge role. Bringing that same tech to the Gen4 ensures consistency across the sim’s stock car lineup.

The Gen4 NASCAR drafting update isn’t just a tweak — it’s a fundamental change to how these races play out. Packs are livelier, strategy is deeper, and every move on track carries more risk and reward.

It may frustrate drivers who preferred the more forgiving old model, but for fans of high-stakes superspeedway action, this is as close as iRacing has ever come to capturing the chaotic beauty of Gen4 pack racing.

The Chevrolet Monte Carlo was one of the defining cars of the early 2000s NASCAR Cup Series. In real life, it carried legends like Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Jimmie Johnson to victory lane. With its sleek body style and aerodynamic efficiency, the Monte Carlo was a powerhouse on superspeedways and intermediates.

In iRacing, the Monte Carlo Gen 4 captures that same energy. It shares the same physics as the Ford Taurus but delivers the visual flair and brand loyalty that Chevy fans crave. Whether you’re chasing pack runs at Daytona or grinding through 500 miles at Charlotte, the Monte Carlo feels iconic.

Screenshot Gallery

Below are a series of shots featuring the Gen 4 Monte Carlo in iRacing, showcasing its classic lines and raw power across a variety of tracks.

The Ford Taurus carried Ford’s banner through the Gen 4 era, with a distinctive blunt nose and unique styling that made it stand out from the field. Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, and Kurt Busch were among the drivers who made the Taurus a winning machine in the early 2000s.

In iRacing, the Gen 4 Taurus brings that legacy to life. It drives identically to the Monte Carlo in terms of physics but stands apart with its look and branding. For Ford loyalists, this car is the perfect throwback to one of the brand’s most memorable NASCAR body styles.

Driving the Gen 4 cars well requires discipline and strategy. Here’s how to tame them:

Throttle Control

With ~725hp, throttle application must be smooth, especially on corner exits.

Wheelspin is easy to trigger and will burn up your rear tires quickly.

Braking

Brakes are strong but easy to lock under load.

On short tracks, brake early and roll speed through corners.

On intermediates, a light trail brake helps rotate the car without destabilizing it.

Cornering Technique

Short tracks: Diamond the corners (high entry, cut low mid-corner, drift up exit).

Intermediates: Focus on momentum — lifting slightly instead of hard braking preserves speed and tires.

Superspeedways: Hold a steady wheel; small corrections matter more than big moves.

Tire Management

The most important skill in Gen 4 racing.

Overdriving early ruins pace later. Smooth, consistent laps win races.

Aim for even tire wear; keep steering inputs minimal.

Draft & Racecraft

At superspeedways, timing runs is everything. Plan your passes.

At intermediates, aero push in dirty air makes following tricky. Manage throttle to compensate.

The NASCAR Gen 4 Cup cars in iRacing represent a golden age of stock car racing. These are the cars that bridged the 1990s “aero wars” into the 2000s, setting the stage for some of NASCAR’s most competitive seasons.

Specs

Engine: 5.8L V8, ~725 horsepower

Weight: ~3,400 lbs (1,542 kg)

Transmission: 4-speed manual

Top Speed: ~190+ mph at superspeedways

Models: Chevrolet Monte Carlo & Ford Taurus (both 2003 body styles)

Handling Characteristics

The Gen 4 cars are known for being fast but aero-sensitive.

On short tracks: They drive like heavy muscle cars — throttle discipline and brake management rule.

On intermediates: Momentum and tire conservation become critical.

On superspeedways: Drafting is everything. Aero push makes following difficult, and runs must be timed carefully.

Compared to modern Cup cars, Gen 4 machines are less refined. They’re heavy, twitchy, and tire wear is brutal.

Difficulty Level

Intermediate-to-Advanced: These cars aren’t as punishing as the 1987s but are far more challenging than the modern Next Gen.

New drivers will find the raw horsepower + tire wear combo overwhelming at first. Patience and rhythm are key.

Real-World Tie-In

The 2003 Cup season produced some of NASCAR’s most memorable battles. Drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, and Jimmie Johnson built legacies in these very machines. In iRacing, you get to recreate the era of side-by-side battles at Charlotte, Bristol, Daytona, and beyond.

Why It’s Fun in iRacing

Old-school feel: Manual shifting, raw power, no electronic aids.

Strategy-heavy racing: Tire management, pit calls, and drafting skill decide winners.

Diverse racing: Works across short tracks, intermediates, and superspeedways with unique challenges at each.

The Gen 4 Cup cars deliver some of iRacing’s most satisfying stock car racing experiences.

iRacing added the NASCAR Cup Gen 4 cars — the 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Ford Taurus — in March 2023 (2023 Season 2 build). This marked the arrival of an iconic era in NASCAR history, when horsepower was unrestricted, aerodynamics were evolving rapidly, and stock car racing was arguably at its most raw and unpredictable.

The Gen 4 cars fill a gap in iRacing’s oval lineup between the high-powered 1987 Cup machines and the modern Next Gen. With around 725 horsepower, big, heavy chassis, and aero-sensitive handling, they give sim racers the chance to relive an era of thunderous racing and nail-biting pack battles.
