The Chicago Street Course in iRacing is unlike any other venue in the sim. Nestled in the heart of downtown Chicago, this 2.2-mile (3.54 km), 12-turn street circuit winds through Grant Park, incorporating iconic city landmarks and sweeping views of Lake Michigan.

Layouts Available

2023 NASCAR Cup Layout (2.2 miles): The definitive configuration, built for NASCAR’s first-ever street race. Featuring long straights, tight 90-degree corners, and two critical braking zones, it mirrors the real-world event used in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Prototype / Alternate Configs: iRacing also includes prototype versions used during testing phases, giving racers additional variations on the same streets.

Key Characteristics

Street circuit DNA: Narrow racing surface, unforgiving walls, and minimal runoff define every lap.

Technical braking zones: Heavy braking into Turns 4, 7, and 11 makes them prime overtaking spots but also hotspots for incidents.

Long straights: Balbo Drive and Lake Shore Drive allow cars to stretch their legs, creating slipstream battles.

Bumpy surface: True to street circuit tradition, surface grip changes and curb management are constant factors.

Scenery immersion: Racing past Grant Park, Buckingham Fountain, and surrounded by skyscrapers, Chicago delivers an atmosphere unmatched in iRacing.

Chicago’s inclusion shows iRacing’s ability to bring modern motorsport experiments—like NASCAR’s first urban event—directly to its members with laser-scanned precision.

The Chicago Street Course is one of the most ambitious projects in iRacing history. Released on June 5, 2023, it coincided with NASCAR’s groundbreaking move to bring the Cup Series into the heart of a major U.S. city.

Track Basics

Length: 2.2 miles / 3.54 km

Turns: 12

Direction: Clockwise

Type: Temporary street circuit

Major Events: NASCAR Cup Series (Grant Park 220), eNASCAR showcases.

Key Sections

Turn 1–2: A fast opening left-right that funnels cars into the narrow streets.

Turn 4: Heavy braking zone at Balbo Drive, one of the best overtaking chances.

Lake Shore Drive Straight: Longest straight on the track, where slipstreaming creates drafting battles.

Turn 7: Another heavy braking corner, critical for lap times and overtakes.

Grant Park complex (Turns 9–12): A flowing yet tight sequence leading back to the start/finish straight, demanding focus and clean exits.

Driving Keys

Patience & precision: With walls lining every section, overdriving often leads to disaster.

Brake management: Consistent braking points are crucial, especially in heavier stock cars.

Setup balance: Low downforce helps on the straights, but stability is required for the technical sections.

Racecraft: Overtaking is limited—drivers must maximize opportunities at Turns 4, 7, and 11.

Chicago is a true test of adaptability. Unlike traditional ovals or road courses, it forces iRacers into a street-racing mindset—one where precision, awareness, and confidence separate the contenders from the pretenders.
