The Mount Washington Auto Road is one of the most extreme challenges available in iRacing. Known as “the Carriage Road” when it was first built in 1861, it is today a legendary motorsport venue thanks to the Climb to the Clouds Hillclimb.
Track Basics
- Length: 7.6 miles / 12.2 km
- Surface: Paved with sections of dirt/gravel (in certain historical events)
- Elevation Gain: 4,618 feet (1,407 meters)
- Direction: Uphill only (hillclimb)
- Major Event: Climb to the Clouds Hillclimb
Key Sections
- Start Area: The base of the mountain provides the launch point for runs. Getting traction early is critical.
- Lower Roadway: Wide but still narrow by circuit standards, with sharp hairpins and tree-lined danger.
- Switchbacks: Midway up, the road becomes tighter, forcing constant steering adjustments.
- Tree Line: Near 4,000 feet of elevation, the road opens up with less foliage but more wind exposure.
- Summit Push: The last section features long sweepers and fast straights—momentum and bravery are required to finish strong.
Driving Keys
- Concentration: With no room for error, the entire climb demands absolute focus.
- Car setup: High downforce cars gain stability, but hillclimb events often favor light, nimble machines.
- Corner memory: Learning the sequence of corners is essential; pace notes are often used in real events.
- Confidence in braking: Narrow widths and steep drops leave no margin for late or missed braking.
Driving Mount Washington in iRacing is less about lap times and more about survival, precision, and mastery.
