iRacing Unleashes the New Porsche 911 GT3 R (992)

The iRacing community is abuzz with excitement as the highly anticipated Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) is set to make its debut in the virtual racing world in just a few days. As the latest iteration in a long line of Porsche 911s built specifically for sports car racing, the 992-spec edition follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, the 991-based GT3 R, which made its racing debut back in 2019. This new addition to the iRacing platform joins the already popular Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, based on the 992 generation, which made its debut in 2021.

In its inaugural season in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) has already made quite an impact. Five teams, namely Pfaff Motorsports, MDK Motorsports, Wright Motorsports, AO Racing Team, and Kelly-Moss with Riley, have all brought at least one 992 to the grid, competing across the GTD (GT Daytona) and GTD Pro divisions.

One of the standout features of the 911 GT3 R (992) is its powerful 4.2-liter Porsche flat-six engine. This marks a significant step up in displacement from the 4.0-liter units found in the previous iteration. The increase in engine size provides drivers with a substantial boost in performance, allowing them to push the limits and unleash the full potential of the car.

The 992-spec Porsche 911 GT3 R wasted no time in making its mark on the racetrack. During the 2023 12 Hours of Sebring, the Pfaff Motorsports GTD Pro squad, consisting of Klaus Bachler, Patrick Pilet, and Laurens Vanthoor, secured the car’s first IMSA victory. Their exceptional driving skills combined with the formidable performance of the 911 GT3 R (992) resulted in a well-deserved win, setting the stage for an exciting racing season ahead.

Not stopping at just one triumph, the Pfaff Motorsports team continued to impress by claiming a third-place finish on the challenging streets of Long Beach the following month. This consistent performance showcased the car’s adaptability to different circuits and reinforced its position as a formidable contender in the GTD Pro category.

Kelly-Moss with Riley also made their mark with the 911 GT3 R (992) at the 12 Hours of Sebring, securing the car’s first GTD podium finish. Alec Udell, Julien Andlauer, and David Brule put on a remarkable display of skill and teamwork, proving that the Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) is a force to be reckoned with in the highly competitive GTD division.

As the iRacing community eagerly awaits the release of the Porsche 911 GT3 R (992), anticipation is high for the exhilarating virtual racing experiences it promises to deliver. With its powerful engine, aerodynamic design, and proven performance on real-world racetracks, this new addition to the iRacing platform is expected to captivate sim racers worldwide.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) embodies the spirit of Porsche’s racing heritage, combining cutting-edge technology, precision engineering, and a relentless pursuit of performance. It represents the culmination of decades of racing experience and a commitment to excellence that has made Porsche a dominant force in motorsport.

As iRacing enthusiasts prepare to strap into the cockpit of the Porsche 911 GT3 R (992), they can expect an immersive and thrilling experience that captures the essence of sports car racing. Whether competing against friends or taking on the world’s best sim racers, the 992-spec edition of the Porsche 911 GT3 R is poised to leave its mark on the virtual racing world and solidify its status as a true icon of motorsport.
