Ford Mustang GT3 Overview and Guide

Specs, handling traits, and racing style of the Ford Mustang GT3.

The Ford Mustang GT3 is Ford Performance’s return to global sports car racing, and in iRacing, it represents a modern mix of American muscle and precision GT3 engineering. Released in the 2023 Season 3 build (June 2023), the Mustang GT3 is developed by Ford Performance in collaboration with Multimatic Motorsports and is built to compete in endurance events worldwide.

Powered by a 5.4L naturally aspirated V8 producing around 600 horsepower, the Mustang GT3 blends raw performance with aerodynamic refinement. It is designed for international GT3 competition, including IMSA, WEC, and GT World Challenge, bringing Ford back into the spotlight after the Ford GT program.

Performance & Specs

  • Engine: 5.4L V8, naturally aspirated
  • Horsepower: ~600 hp (BoP dependent)
  • Transmission: 6-speed sequential paddle-shift
  • Weight: ~1,250 kg (depending on Balance of Performance)
  • Top Speed: ~175–180 mph depending on setup and track
  • Electronics: Advanced GT3-standard ABS and traction control

The car is built on the 2024 Mustang Dark Horse platform, heavily modified for racing with a wide-body chassis, aggressive aero, and purpose-built endurance systems.

Handling Characteristics

The Mustang GT3 delivers a different feel compared to many European GT3 cars:

  • Aggressive Power Delivery: The V8 delivers strong torque and acceleration off corners.
  • High-Speed Stability: The aero design provides confidence in fast sweepers.
  • Cornering: The car can feel heavier and requires precise rotation on turn-in.
  • Braking: Stable under heavy braking, especially with ABS, but requires discipline for trail braking.

Drivers describe the Mustang as a car that feels “muscular but planted” — strong on straights, reliable in long stints, and competitive when driven smoothly.

Difficulty Level

The Mustang GT3 sits at an intermediate difficulty level. It is approachable for newer GT3 drivers thanks to its stable platform, but it requires discipline to maximize rotation and maintain tire life. Its raw torque can be punishing if throttle application is sloppy, especially in low-grip conditions.

Real-World Tie-In

The Mustang GT3 marks Ford’s first GT3 customer program in decades. Designed by Multimatic and supported by Ford Performance, the car competes in:

  • IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship
  • FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), including the 24 Hours of Le Mans
  • GT World Challenge

This program gives privateer teams access to a factory-level GT3 car, expanding Ford’s racing footprint beyond North America.

Why Drive the Mustang GT3 in iRacing?

  • American Muscle in GT3: Unique character compared to Ferrari, BMW, and Porsche.
  • Competitive Aero: Strong stability at high speeds.
  • Versatile Performance: Works well in both sprints and endurance events.
  • Heritage Factor: A modern Mustang competing globally adds brand pride and excitement.

Whether in the VRS GT Endurance Championship, IMSA iRacing Series, or major special events like the Daytona 24, the Mustang GT3 is a true contender.

Tips for Success

  • Smooth Throttle: Aggressive application overwhelms the rear tires quickly.
  • Setup Choices: Use higher downforce on technical tracks; go low-drag for high-speed venues like Monza or Daytona.
  • Brake Discipline: Keep braking inputs progressive to maintain stability.
  • Trust the Aero: The car rewards high-speed commitment when driven precisely.

The Ford Mustang GT3 symbolizes Ford’s global return to top-level sports car racing. In iRacing, it brings a unique blend of muscle and finesse to the already stacked GT3 field. It is stable, powerful, and highly competitive in the right hands, making it a favorite for Ford fans and GT3 enthusiasts alike.
