Beginner Setup & Driving Tips – Ferrari 296 Challenge

Advice for mastering the Ferrari 296 Challenge in iRacing.

The Ferrari 296 Challenge is a thrilling yet demanding car in iRacing. With nearly 700 horsepower from its twin-turbo V6, it delivers blistering straight-line speed but also requires finesse to extract consistent lap times. As Ferrari’s newest one-make racer, it rewards precision, patience, and discipline. Here are some key tips to help new drivers get comfortable behind the wheel.

Driving Tips

The biggest challenge of the 296 is balancing turbo power with traction. On corner exits, it’s easy to get greedy with the throttle and spin up the rear tires, especially in lower gears. A useful technique is short-shifting—changing up a gear earlier than you normally would—to smooth out power delivery and reduce wheelspin. This helps you maintain momentum without losing time in oversteer corrections.

On corner entry, the car is stable under braking, which makes it ideal for trail braking into medium- and high-speed turns. You can carry brake pressure deeper into the corner to help rotate the car, but be mindful of the ABS system. While ABS can save you from lockups, aggressive use will still wear or flat-spot the tires over long stints, so modulate brake pressure carefully.

Setup Tips

The default iRacing setup for the 296 Challenge is competitive and a great starting point. As you grow more comfortable, here are some beginner-friendly tweaks:

  • Rear Wing: Increase downforce for stability on fast circuits like Monza or Spa, or trim it back slightly for more top speed on shorter, technical tracks.
  • Differential Preload: Lowering the preload can improve traction out of slow corners, helping to tame the turbo surge on throttle application.
  • Brake Bias: Adjust based on track demands—move forward for stability in heavy braking zones, or rearward to increase corner rotation on tighter layouts.
  • Tire Pressures: Keep them close to baseline while you’re learning; only fine-tune once you’re confident in your consistency.

Racecraft

The Ferrari Challenge is built around close pack racing, and the sim version is no different. Expect frequent side-by-side battles and extended drafting duels down long straights. Positioning becomes just as important as raw lap time:

  • Defend the inside line in braking zones, as late-braking attempts are common.
  • Plan exits carefully—carrying momentum out of corners is key for defending and overtaking.
  • Stay patient—mistakes are common when drivers overestimate the car’s traction, so consistency often wins more positions than risky moves.

The Ferrari 296 Challenge may look intimidating with its 700 horsepower, but once you learn to balance the turbo power and harness the car’s stability under braking, it becomes one of the most rewarding platforms in iRacing. Focus on smooth throttle application, smart setup adjustments, and disciplined racecraft, and you’ll quickly find yourself running competitive laps in one of Ferrari’s most exciting customer racers.
