What’s Next for GTP Hybrid in iRacing

Season 4’s hybrid overhaul delivered the biggest change yet for iRacing’s electrified racecars — especially the GTP class and Ferrari 499P. But the work isn’t done. The current system is accurate and seamless, but it isn’t the “final form.” Here’s what’s still on the horizon, what didn’t make it into Season 4, and what drivers should expect next.

What We Have Now (Season 4 Recap)

  • Full architecture rewrite: Hybrid code fully integrated into the latest power unit structure, making regen and friction brake blending smoother and more flexible.
  • GTP cars: ICE + MGU blended, capped total wheel power, balanced 50% SOC strategy locked in. No adjustable deploy maps.
  • Ferrari 499P: Same as GTP plus a 190 km/h deploy threshold and 100 kW cap. AWD only above threshold, RWD below it.
  • Other classes:
    • Mercedes W12/W13 got a “fast recharge” option.
    • McLaren MP4-30 unchanged.
    • LMP1s fixed for manual deploy cut, easing understeer.
  • Not included: Virtual Energy (fuel as joules/percentages), or any driver-adjustable hybrid maps.

What’s Coming Next

  1. INDYCAR Hybrid (December 2025)
    • Nearly manual deployment system.
    • Drivers will have to manage when to push or save battery.
    • Adds strategic depth beyond the GTP’s “invisible” behavior.
  2. Ferrari 499P Tuning
    • Devs are testing a feature to adjust the high-speed balance of the car by changing how much drive the MGU provides on the front axle.
    • Still in progress — not ready for Season 4 because it wasn’t seamless enough.
  3. Virtual Energy (Maybe)
    • Devs confirmed they deprioritized it for now.
    • Would reframe how energy is displayed (liters/gallons → joules/percentages).
    • Practical impact for drivers is minimal, so it’s not urgent — but could come later.
  4. LMP1 Refresh
    • Porsche 919 and Audi R18 are showing their age in code.
    • A full hybrid/drivetrain refresh is under consideration to improve drivability and parity with newer classes.

What That Means for GTP Drivers

For now, the GTPs are simple: you just drive them like ICE cars, with the hybrid system working silently in the background. But looking ahead, the landscape will change:

  • Ferrari 499P owners may get more setup depth if front-axle MGU adjustability is implemented.
  • BoP will continue to evolve as iRacing fine-tunes total power outputs across manufacturers.
  • Cross-class racing will become more nuanced as LMP1s and IndyCars get their own hybrid updates.

TL;DR

  • Season 4’s system is accurate but not the end.
  • Coming in December: INDYCAR’s manual hybrid deployment.
  • Ferrari 499P: future front-axle MGU tuning planned.
  • Virtual Energy left out (for now).
  • LMP1 refresh is on the roadmap.
