Most sim racers assume the fastest way through a corner is a smooth arc at constant speed. Understanding the oval racing line explains why that approach has a ceiling, and how to break through it.

A circular racing line keeps you at constant speed throughout the corner. To stay on the limit of grip this way, you have to stop braking at turn-in. Then hold maintenance throttle all the way through the apex. Apply power only at the exit. It works, but entry speed equals apex speed equals exit speed. There is no room to push.
The oval-shaped line works on a different principle. The more you slow down before the apex, the more the car can rotate through the corner. The more you accelerate on exit, the less cornering the car needs to do. You go slower at the apex and faster where it matters. That place is the exit onto the next straight, where lap times get made.
In practice, this means braking later and harder. You arrive at the apex slower than feels natural. You apply throttle earlier than feels safe. Minimum speed through the corner drops. However, exit speed rises. In iRacing, as in real racing, exit speed is what determines lap times.
Where the Oval Line Matters Most
The oval shape matters most in slow and medium-speed corners. In high-speed sweepers, lateral loads stay more constant. Therefore, the difference between a circular and oval approach is smaller. In tight corners that feed onto long straights, however, this is where lap time is made or lost every single lap. That is because the exit feeds directly into your top speed run.
How to Practice It
Pick one corner in your next session and brake 5 to 10 meters later than normal. Let the car rotate more at the apex. Then unwind the steering and get on the throttle earlier than feels right. It will not work immediately. The oval shape takes several sessions to commit to. The instinct to carry more speed through the middle is hard to override. However, once it clicks, it applies to every corner and every car class in iRacing.
