Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Official Release

The Global Mazda MX-5 Cup arrives in iRacing as the official spec racing platform.

The Global Mazda MX-5 Cup made its iRacing debut in the 2016 Season 2 build, released on March 29, 2016. This update introduced the fourth-generation ND MX-5 to the sim, replacing the older NC-based MX-5 models and modernizing iRacing’s entry-level road racing ladder.

Powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-4 engine producing around 180 horsepower, the MX-5 Cup delivers modest power but pairs it with a lightweight chassis and 6-speed manual gearbox. The result is a car that emphasizes momentum, precision, and consistency over brute force—perfect for learning the fundamentals of competitive sim racing.

From the moment of its release, the MX-5 Cup became the foundation of iRacing’s Rookie road license progression. Its approachable handling, forgiving characteristics, and close pack racing made it the most raced car on the service, providing an ideal environment for new drivers to learn racecraft, track positioning, and car control.

Nearly a decade later, the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup continues to define grassroots road racing in iRacing, serving as both a training platform for newcomers and a fan-favorite for experienced racers who enjoy the purity of spec competition.
