In August 2020, iRacing officially announced the Corvette C8.R iRacing would be arriving for the Season 4 build. The announcement confirmed that Chevrolet had provided unprecedented access to the car’s engineering data, allowing for a recreation that captured the revolutionary mid-engine balance and the high-revving soul of the 5.5L V8 engine. This official partnership meant that for the first time, iRacers would have access to the exact same vehicle dynamics used by Corvette Racing to develop their championship-winning strategies in the IMSA GTLM class.
The Heart of a Champion: The 5.5L V8
The Corvette C8.R iRacing official specs revealed a machine built for raw endurance. Unlike the twin-turbocharged engines of its rivals, the C8.R utilized a 5.5-liter, naturally aspirated flat-plane crank V8. Producing 500 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, the engine was designed for immediate throttle response and a linear power band. iRacing’s engineering team emphasized that the car’s mid-engine layout allowed for a much more optimized weight distribution, resulting in a lower center of gravity and significantly improved turn-in characteristics compared to any previous Corvette on the platform.
Advanced Aero and Chassis Design
The Corvette C8.R iRacing announcement also highlighted the car’s “clean sheet” aerodynamic design. Without an engine in the way, Chevy engineers were able to maximize front-end downforce, a detail iRacing modeled using their latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools. The car featured a six-speed Xtrac sequential gearbox and an incredibly stiff chassis that promised to make it one of the most stable platforms in the GTE class. At a launch price of $11.95, the C8.R was positioned as the new flagship for American endurance racing, ready to take on the worldโs best at Le Mans and Daytona.
