Cold tire pressure in iRacing is not the number that matters. The number that matters is where the pressure ends up after 3 to 5 laps of racing, when the rubber has heated through and settled at operating temperature. The starting pressure is just the variable you use to get there.

Understanding this relationship is the reason drivers adjust cold pressure when track temperatures rise. A hot summer track generates more thermal energy through the surface, which pushes tire temperatures higher and, as a result, drives hot pressures up. If you leave your cold pressure set the same across all conditions, you end up running overinflated tires on a hot day and underinflated ones on a cold one. Neither is fast.
How Cold Pressure Becomes Hot Pressure
The pressure rise from cold to fully heated varies by car and tire compound, but a working range for most iRacing GT3 cars is 4 to 8 psi. That means if your target hot pressure is 30 psi and the track temperature is 45 degrees Celsius, you may need to start as low as 22 to 24 psi cold to hit it. On a cooler 15-degree track, the same car might reach 30 psi hot from a starting point of 26 or 27 psi cold.
This is not a guess. It is a measurement. The most reliable way to find the right starting pressure for any condition is to set the car to a known baseline, run 4 to 5 laps at representative race pace, and check the tire readouts in the F2 black box while the tires are still at temperature. If front left is reading 34 psi hot and you want 30, drop 4 psi from the cold setting and run again. Repeat until the hot numbers land where you want them. Most drivers can dial this in with two or three test sessions once they know what they are looking for.
Third-party telemetry tools, such as SimHub or the iRacing data logger, let you track pressure across an entire stint and see how it evolves as tires build heat cycles. That data is useful for endurance racing, where conditions shift across a 30- or 90-minute race and pressure can climb further into long green flag runs.
What Happens When You Get It Wrong
Running too high hot pressure reduces the contact patch, which causes the tire to behave as if it is smaller than it should be. On corner entry, this often shows as understeer because the front has less grip. The center of the tire wears faster, which is visible in telemetry data and in the wear display at the end of a stint.
Running too low creates the opposite problem. The sidewall flexes more than it should, which generates inconsistent grip, makes the car feel vague in fast corners, and pushes temperatures into the shoulder zones. Shoulder overheating tends to get worse as the stint goes on, so a tire that feels fine at lap 5 may be struggling by lap 15.
For most iRacing cars, moving from a default setup with uncorrected pressure to a properly tuned hot target is worth 0.3 to 0.8 seconds per lap. The gains show up most clearly in sustained high-speed corners where the tire needs consistent grip across the full arc, and in rear stability during corner exit where pressure affects how the tire manages lateral and longitudinal forces simultaneously.
The community revisits this topic regularly because the variables change. New tracks, seasonal weather simulation updates, and different cars all shift the baseline. Getting in the habit of checking hot pressure in every test session, rather than assuming defaults work, is the fastest way to stop leaving time on the table.
