Most iRacing drivers set their field of view once, decide it looks about right, and never think about it again. The problem is that FOV is not a feel setting. It is a calculation, and if your chair is in the wrong position, you are running a distorted image every single lap. Because this distortion is subtle, most drivers compensate without realising it. However, fixing it properly can sharpen your depth perception in braking zones and tighten your consistency through corners.

What FOV Actually Means in iRacing
Field of view is the angle of the virtual world your screen captures in one frame. In iRacing, you set it under Options and then Graphics. Most drivers type in a number that feels comfortable, usually somewhere between 50 and 90 degrees. However, there is a mathematically correct FOV for your specific setup, and it depends on just two things: the physical width of your screen and how far your eyes sit from it.
When your FOV is wider than the correct value for your distance, the edges of the screen stretch and fish-eye. Objects look warped, and the distances to braking markers, apex curbs, and turn exits become unreliable. When your FOV is narrower than it should be, you get a tunnel effect that compresses depth. Because neither extreme is natural, your brain is constantly doing quiet correction work, and that correction is never perfectly consistent.
The Formula Behind Correct FOV
The formula for a correct FOV is: FOV = 2 x arctan(screen width divided by (2 x viewing distance)). Both measurements need to be in the same unit. Centimetres work well. So if your monitor is 53cm wide and you sit 80cm away, the math gives you approximately 36.6 degrees.
That might sound narrow, especially if you are used to running 60 or 70 degrees. But that number is the angle at which the screen acts as a true window onto the iRacing world. At that angle, the geometry is correct and your brain does not need to compensate for distortion. As a result, your perception of distance, speed, and corner entry becomes more accurate and more consistent lap after lap.
Why Sitting Closer Is the Real Fix
Here is the key insight. If you are sitting 100cm from your screen and the formula gives you a correct FOV of 29 degrees, you have two choices: run 29 degrees and stare through a narrow tunnel, or move your chair closer. Sit 60cm from the same monitor and your correct FOV jumps to around 47 degrees. That is much more natural and immersive, and it has zero fish-eye distortion because the geometry matches your actual viewing angle.
Closer distance means a wider mathematically correct FOV, because the screen fills more of your real field of vision. This is why some fast iRacers run fairly close to their monitor and use FOV settings in the 40 to 55 degree range. They did not pick those numbers at random. Their seating distance produces that number through the formula, and the result is an accurate on-screen image.
How Distance Affects Your Lap Times
Depth perception is the part that shows up on the stopwatch. When your FOV does not match your seating distance, the distances to reference points look slightly off. You adapt over hundreds of laps, but the adaptation is inconsistent. Small variations in your braking points, the kind that cost a tenth here and a tenth there, often trace back to visual geometry your brain is silently trying to correct.
Drivers who fix their FOV and seating distance together often find their usual braking references feel slightly off for a session or two while their brain recalibrates. After that adjustment period, consistency tends to improve. Additionally, corners that rely on precise depth cues, such as the late apexes at the Nordschleife or the fast sweepers at Sebring, tend to become more readable when the visual geometry is accurate.
How to Set Your iRacing FOV Step by Step
Start by measuring your monitor’s visible width from left edge to right edge in centimetres. Do not include the bezel. Then measure your eye-to-screen distance while sitting in your normal driving position, not leaning forward or back. Plug both numbers into the formula above, or search for a free sim racing FOV calculator online. Several good options exist that do the arithmetic instantly once you enter your two measurements.
In iRacing, go to Options and then Graphics. The field of view setting is in the camera section. Enter your calculated value, save, and restart a session so the change fully takes effect. If the result feels uncomfortably narrow, the correct adjustment is to move your chair closer rather than increasing the FOV number. For most single-monitor setups, a viewing distance of 50 to 75 centimetres produces a correct FOV in the 40 to 60 degree range, which most drivers find natural.
One More Setting to Check
After updating your FOV, check the horizon line. iRacing has a separate camera height setting in the same graphics options menu that affects how the virtual cockpit lines up with your real eye level. If the horizon looks tilted or unusually high after the change, a small adjustment to the camera height setting will straighten it out. Combined with a correct FOV and a properly measured seating distance, this gives you a visual setup that matches what the game intends you to see, lap after lap.
