The Core Problem: Understeer
Understeer is the default condition in a FWD car that is being pushed. The front wheels are doing two jobs simultaneously, generating traction and steering, and when you ask them to do both at maximum, grip breaks down at the front and the car pushes wide. Drivers who respond by turning more lock in will make it worse. The fix is always to reduce the load on the front tires by releasing the throttle, taking a wider entry line, or both.
Trail Braking Matters More, Not Less
One of the common misunderstandings about FWD is that trail braking does not apply. The opposite is true. Carrying brake pressure into the corner loads the front tires and helps the car rotate in a way that pure throttle-off cannot replicate. Releasing the brakes mid-corner removes that weight transfer and leaves the front end loose at the worst moment. Throttle Application on Exit
In a RWD car, early and aggressive throttle causes oversteer. In a FWD car, early throttle causes understeer and pushes the car wide before the apex, which kills exit speed. The timing and aggression of your throttle application in FWD needs to be later and more progressive than you are used to in RWD cars. Wait until the car is pointed at its exit line before building throttle, not before.
Setup Adjustments That Help
Most of the setup work in FWD cars focuses on reducing understeer. Softening the rear suspension helps the rear follow the front more willingly and improves rotation. Reducing rear wing if the car has it shifts balance forward. Increasing front camber improves grip at the tires doing the most work. If the car has adjustable brake bias, moving it rearward helps generate rotation under braking without requiring you to build the technique from scratch.
Kerb Use and Car Placement
FWD cars are more sensitive to kerb strikes on entry than most RWD alternatives. Hitting a kerb hard on corner entry can unsettle the front tires enough to trigger the understeer condition you are trying to manage. Drive tight to painted curbing on entries when possible, and save aggressive kerb contact for exits, where the car is already pointed outward and the front axle is not doing maximum steering work.
Car placement habits from RWD classes also need adjustment. In a GT3 car, a late apex with early throttle produces maximum exit speed. In FWD, positioning the car toward the center of the circuit on entry with a gentler turn-in loads the front tires progressively and keeps them in their working grip range longer through the corner. The adjustment feels subtle at first, but it shows up clearly in exit speed data when you pull laps in the replay tool.
FWD cars are a genuine discipline in iRacing, not just a novelty class. The TCR series runs competitive grids, the cars reward technical driving, and the drivers who understand the technique differences consistently outpace those who try to drive them like GT cars.
