Season 3 2026 marks a major turning point for iRacing dirt AI racing. Two new features arrived with the build: general Dirt AI support and a full AI Heat Racing mode. Together, they represent the biggest upgrade to dirt oval AI in iRacing history. Dirt AI has lagged behind paved oval and road racing for years. Season 3 finally closes that gap.

What iRacing Dirt AI Racing Gets in Season 3
Dirt oval AI is harder to build than paved circuit AI. The driving line on dirt changes constantly throughout a race. As the surface rubbers in, the fast line shifts. What works early in a heat may be wrong by the feature. Therefore, a fixed racing line approach breaks down quickly on dirt. iRacing’s Season 3 update addresses that directly.
In practice, dirt oval drivers can now race against AI opponents without joining official sessions. Additionally, those opponents should drive like real dirt racers. This is not a rough approximation borrowed from paved oval behavior.
AI Heat Racing: Running a Full Dirt Oval Program
AI Heat Racing takes things further than just adding AI cars to a dirt track. In fact, it replicates the full structured event format used in real dirt oval racing. A typical program starts with qualifying. Multiple heat races follow, grouped by qualifying time. After those, a B-main sets the feature grid. Finally, the feature closes the event.
Results from each stage set starting positions for the next. As a result, every part of the program carries real stakes. Drivers can now run a complete dirt oval event against AI from qualifying to the checkers. They can progress through heats to the feature just like in official racing. For drivers who want realistic solo practice, this is a significant addition. It also opens the door for hosted AI leagues built around the dirt oval format.
Catching Up to Dirt Racing’s Growth
Dirt oval has grown significantly in iRacing’s official structure over recent seasons. New tracks, new cars, and more official series have expanded the category. However, the AI side did not keep pace with that growth. Consequently, dirt oval drivers were left without solid AI competition. Paved oval and road racing drivers had that option for years. Season 3 addresses that directly. Dirt oval practice and solo racing now match what the rest of the sim offers in AI mode.
