The real-world Knoxville Nationals has run every August since 1961. It carries a prize purse of more than $1 million and is the premier sprint car race in the United States. iRacing mirrors that prestige with World of Outlaws 410 Sprint Cars at Knoxville Raceway, and a heat race ladder that captures the same intensity as the real thing.
Who Can Enter the iRacing Knoxville Nationals 2026
Entry is open to most dirt oval drivers. You need a Dirt Oval license at Class C or higher. Class D drivers can also enter, but only if their Safety Rating is at 4.0 or better.
Each split holds up to 60 drivers, and iRating determines your split assignment. A strong iRating puts you in a faster, more competitive split. The event sets a 17-point incident limit, so clean racing matters from the first lap of qualifying. One bad wreck, or a string of contacts, can end your night before you get close to the A-Main.
The car for this event is the World of Outlaws 410 Sprint Car at Knoxville Raceway. If you have not run the 410 much, a few practice sessions before qualifying are worth the time. It rewards commitment and precise throttle control. When it gets away from you on Knoxville’s high-banked dirt, it gets away fast.
Heat Races, Alphabet Soup, and the A-Main
Three minutes of qualifying sets the heat race grid. That is your one shot to put down a clean lap and lock in a starting spot. Six ten-lap heat races follow, with the top three finishers in each heat transferring directly to the 35-lap A-Main.
If you do not make the top three in your heat, you are not done. Non-advancing drivers enter the Alphabet Soup bracket. It is a ladder of last-chance qualifiers running from the E-Main up to the B-Main. Each round, the top four finishers advance to the next race:
- E-Main: 10 laps, top 4 advance to the D-Main
- D-Main: 12 laps, top 4 advance to the C-Main
- C-Main: 14 laps, top 4 advance to the B-Main
- B-Main: 16 laps, top 4 advance to the A-Main
There is a clear gap in track position between heat transfers and Alphabet Soup climbers. However, 4 spots remain live for anyone with the pace to run the full bracket. Drivers who transfer from the B-Main start at the back of the A-Main field, but they are in.
The A-Main is 35 laps with 22 drivers: 18 who transferred from the heat races and 4 who came through the B-Main. One key rule for the feature is that caution laps do not count toward the total. The race runs 35 green-flag laps, regardless of how many yellows come out. Late-race restarts can flip the running order. If you are deep in the field, every caution resets the deck. If you are out front, defending on restarts matters as much as raw speed.
The competition in a top-split A-Main at Knoxville is serious. The banking and high grip put cars side by side from the green flag. The racing is aggressive from lap one. Manage the 17-point incident limit and choose your passing moments carefully. Running consistent laps through traffic beats forcing moves that are not there yet.
When to Race and Watch
Super Sessions run August 4 through August 9, with qualifying at 9 PM ET each night. On Saturday, August 8, two Super Sessions run: one at 11 AM ET and a second at 9 PM ET.
