For a decade, Porsche built its GT4 racing program on the 718 Cayman platform. More than 1,500 Cayman GT4 race cars have sold worldwide since the program launched in 2016. However, the 911 GT4 R changes the foundation entirely. Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, described it as combining “911 DNA and the tried-and-tested GT4 concept.” No manufacturer has previously brought a 911-based car into global GT4 competition. The 911 GT4 R builds on the technical architecture of the current 911 Cup. Compared to the Cayman models, it also uses wider track widths and further-developed motorsport electronics. Porsche says the result improves lap times, drivability, and stability in racing conditions.
The engine is a 4.0-liter six-cylinder boxer producing up to 382 kW (520 PS) with 470 Newton metres of torque. Under GT4 Balance of Performance regulations, the car ships ex-works with air restrictors that reduce output to 430 PS. A sequential six-speed dog-gearbox with paddle shifters handles power delivery. The rear wing adjusts to 11 positions, while dampers are dual-adjustable with three selectable spring rates. Inside, a 10.3-inch color display provides driver information alongside an integrated data logger and GPS system. Additionally, Porsche has built exterior panels, doors, and cockpit components from natural-fibre-reinforced plastic. This material keeps weight down while meeting GT4 series requirements.
What the Porsche 911 GT4 R Means for iRacing’s GT4 Class
iRacing currently offers the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR in the GT4 class. It is the direct predecessor to the 911 GT4 R in real-world competition. Beyond GT4, the sim also includes the 992-generation Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and the Porsche 963 GTP. The Porsche Esports Supercup runs on iRacing as part of a multi-season partnership, making iRacing the official home of Porsche’s global esports racing program. This relationship has produced steady Porsche content additions across several years. Each major Porsche customer racing car has generally followed its real-world launch with an iRacing appearance in a reasonable timeframe. The 718 Cayman GT4 MR and 992 GT3 Cup both followed that path. With the 911 GT4 R now confirmed for 2027 customer racing, that precedent is worth keeping in mind.
The GT4 class in iRacing covers several manufacturers. The BMW M4 GT4, Ford Mustang GT4, Mercedes-AMG GT4, Toyota GR Supra GT4, and others compete alongside the 718 Cayman GT4 MR in class races. At present, every car in iRacing’s GT4 roster is either front-engine or mid-engine. The BMW and Ford options use front-engine layouts, while the Porsche Cayman sits mid-ship. A 911 GT4 R would be the first rear-engine car in iRacing’s GT4 class. That is not a minor distinction for drivers who race GT4 regularly. A rear-engine car carries its mass differently, and iRacing’s physics simulation captures those differences with precision. It would expand the competitive variety in the class and open up a new set of driving challenges within the same series.

Rear-Engine vs. Mid-Engine: What Changes in GT4
Since the announcement, iRacers have been discussing how a 911-based GT4 would feel compared to the Cayman. The mid-engine layout of the 718 GT4 MR places mass near the center of the chassis, which promotes neutral balance and predictable rotation through corners. A rear-engine car shifts that balance point rearward. Under GT4 Balance of Performance regulations, both cars would run to the same performance target, but the path to lap time differs between the two layouts. Trail braking works differently at corner entry, the car rotates with a distinct feel, and managing throttle out of slower turns requires a different approach. Drivers who have spent time in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup on iRacing already have a feel for the rear-engine tendency. In a GT4 context, with softer specifications and tighter BoP, those characteristics would show up in their own way.
Run the 718 Cayman GT4 MR While You Wait
The 911 GT4 R is not in iRacing yet, but its predecessor is. The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR is available in the iRacing store and runs in GT4 class series across the season schedule. Road courses including Spa-Francorchamps, Road Atlanta, and Brands Hatch appear regularly on the GT4 calendar. These events typically attract competitive grids, and the 718 Cayman GT4 MR suits drivers who are new to the class while still rewarding precise technique at higher levels. Getting familiar with the car now makes sense. The GT4 class has consistent participation across the year, the Cayman is one of the stronger cars in the field, and any time spent in iRacing’s GT4 series will carry over once newer Porsche content arrives.
The mid-engine feel of the 718 Cayman also provides a useful baseline for understanding what will change when a rear-engine GT4 arrives. Once you know how the Cayman rotates and where it wants you to manage the throttle, the contrast with a 911-based car becomes much clearer. This kind of car-to-car context helps on any new content addition, but it matters more here because the platform shift from mid-engine Cayman to rear-engine 911 is more significant than a simple update within the same family.
The 911 GT4 R enters customer racing in the 2027 season. Whether it arrives in iRacing for Season 1 2027, later in the year, or further out depends on where it sits in the modeling and licensing pipeline. Based on how Porsche and iRacing have handled previous launches, a 2027 iRacing addition seems plausible. Nothing has been confirmed. For now, the 718 Cayman GT4 MR remains the Porsche option in the GT4 class, and it is a strong one. The 911 GT4 R now exists in the real world, and that puts it in the queue.
