The market has moved almost entirely to direct drive at every price point above $300. Gear-driven and belt-driven wheelbases remain available as entry points, primarily from Logitech and Thrustmaster, and they are still competitive for drivers who are new to sim racing or sharing a setup with console use. Above that tier, the comparison is between outrunner motor designs (common in Moza), industrial servo motors (Simagic, Simucube), and proprietary inrunner designs (Fanatec, Logitech G Pro). Motor type affects FFB character as much as torque rating does. Outrunner designs tend to feel smooth and elastic; servo motors feel more direct and raw. Neither is objectively better. The Fanatec Podium DD1 and DD2 remain relevant on the used market. Both were top-tier products before the Simucube 2 and Simagic lines displaced them. If you find a clean DD2 secondhand, it is still a capable wheelbase and the ecosystem supports it. Fanatec’s ClubSport Steering Wheel RS is the standard rim that comes with most Fanatec bundles and works across their QR2 lineup.
Pedals

Load cell pedals measure applied force directly, which is what real brakes do. The Heusinkveld Sprint is a contactless pedal set with Hall-effect sensors on all three pedals, which means no physical contact points to wear out. The Simucube ActivePedal is in a different class entirely: it uses a motor to apply active resistance and can simulate ABS pulsing and brake fade dynamically. These are for drivers who want the pedal feedback to match the telemetry. Folding tubular steel rigs are compact and affordable but flex more under direct drive bases above 10 Nm. Aluminum 8020 extrusion rigs are more rigid and more adjustable, and they are the standard platform for serious iRacers who want their cockpit to stay locked in position under high-torque wheelbase use. For drivers running a direct drive base above 15 Nm, a folding tubular rig is not rigid enough to get the full benefit from the wheelbase. The flex in the frame absorbs torque, which reduces the fidelity of the force feedback reaching your hands. An 8020 aluminum rig with 40x80mm or larger profile eliminates that loss. The Heusinkveld MagShift uses magnetic resistance rather than a physical mechanism, which eliminates the mechanical wear common in high-use shifters. The Fanatec SQ V1.5 is the most broadly compatible shifter in the table and the only one with full H-pattern and sequential in a single unit that works on PlayStation and Xbox without additional adapters.
Displays, VR, and PC Considerations
Display choice affects immersion and situational awareness. A single 1080p monitor at 144Hz or higher is the practical minimum for iRacing’s FFB and physics loop to feel meaningful at the display level. What Matters More Than Torque Output
Headline torque figures dominate wheelbase marketing, and they are a poor primary shopping criterion. A 25 Nm wheelbase used at 20% output feels similar to a 10 Nm wheelbase at 50% output. What separates wheelbases at similar torque ratings is encoder resolution, motor inertia, and firmware quality. Higher encoder resolution means smaller movements are detected and fed back. Lower motor inertia means the wheelbase responds faster to changes in the physics model. Firmware that translates iRacing’s force data cleanly without clipping, clamping, or smoothing artifacts is what determines whether a wheelbase “feels right” in iRacing regardless of its rated torque.
The practical window for iRacing is between 10 Nm and 20 Nm of accessible torque with a quality encoder. Below that range, fine-grain detail in the FFB gets lost. Above it, most drivers turn the FFB down to avoid physical fatigue. The outliers are endurance drivers who prefer lower base FFB strength and need the extra headroom to avoid clipping during wheel-to-wheel contact events.
Ecosystem Lock-in and Mixed Brands
The three primary ecosystems with proprietary console connectivity are Fanatec (Xbox and PlayStation depending on model), Simagic (limited PlayStation compatibility on select models), and Thrustmaster (PlayStation). All other brands in this reference are PC-only via USB. For iRacing, which runs exclusively on PC, ecosystem lock-in is primarily a concern if you share hardware with console use.
Wheel rims, pedals, and shifters from different manufacturers generally work on PC without compatibility issues when connected via USB. A Moza wheelbase can run Heusinkveld pedals and a Sim-Lab shifter without conflict. The limitation is when a peripheral is designed to connect through the wheelbase’s own port rather than USB directly. Fanatec pedals connect through the back of Fanatec wheelbases for console use. On PC with USB standalone, that restriction does not apply.
Wheel rim compatibility is more restrictive. Fanatec uses the QR2 system. Simagic uses their own quick-release. Simucube uses a Magnetic Paddock quick-release standard shared by some third-party manufacturers. Before buying a wheel rim from a different brand than your wheelbase, confirm QR compatibility or plan to use an adapter plate.
Buying Discontinued Sim Racing Hardware on the Used Market
Several wheelbases that were considered top-tier three to five years ago remain excellent hardware today. The Fanatec Podium DD1 and DD2 are well-supported and have a large secondhand market. The Simucube 2 Sport and Pro are current products but also appear frequently used as drivers upgrade to the SC3 line. The Thrustmaster TS-PC Racer and T-GT appeared on the used market in large numbers when direct drive became more accessible, and they remain capable belt-drive wheelbases for drivers who want more than a G29 without committing to direct drive.
When buying used sim racing hardware, firmware update support is the primary risk. A wheelbase that no longer receives firmware updates may lose compatibility with iRacing’s input handling over time. Confirm that the manufacturer still publishes firmware for the product before purchasing. For Fanatec products specifically, check community resources for each model’s firmware history, as support timelines have varied by product generation.
