The iRacing Southern 500 returns to Darlington Raceway this week as the fourth of five full-length NASCAR Cup special events on the iRacing calendar this year. Since the window covers Labor Day weekend, you have multiple sessions across six days to choose from.

The iRacing Southern 500 covers 500 miles and 367 laps on Darlington’s 1.366-mile oval. Drivers also run the full Next Gen NASCAR Cup Series lineup: Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Ford Mustang, or Toyota Camry. In fixed setup sessions, the setup is locked but all three body styles are available. In open setup, the car choice and the setup sheet are both yours to work out.
Dynamic weather is active, and the in-sim race runs September 6 at 5:00 PM. Splits hold up to 37 drivers, seeded by iRating.
Darlington earned its nickname because the track is genuinely asymmetrical. Because the oval predates standardized car dimensions, Turns 1 and 2 are tighter than Turns 3 and 4. A setup balanced for one end will often fight back at the other.
In addition, the wall on exit of Turns 2 and 4 is historically unforgiving. That carries into the sim.
For open setup runners, the challenge is building something balanced across both ends for 500 miles. Fixed setup events at Darlington are tighter on lap times, but the same wall awareness applies regardless.

The top split of the Friday night open setup session (Saturday 1:00 AM GMT) broadcasts on RACESPOT at iRacing.com/live. Coverage typically runs the full race from green to checkered. If you’re racing a later session, watching the top split first is also useful. It shows where incidents tend to develop at Darlington.
Entering the iRacing Southern 500
To register, you need an Oval license of Class C or higher. Class D Oval license holders can also enter with a Safety Rating of 4.0 or above. Sign up through the Special Events page in the iRacing interface. There is no extra registration step beyond selecting your session.
The incident limits are strict for a race this long. The DQ threshold is 25 incident points, with a penalty flag at 17X. On a 367-lap race, however, 25X goes faster than most drivers expect. The field is most compressed in the opening 50 laps, so protecting your margin there matters most. Restarts are another moment to pay attention. When the field bunches and goes green, the first corner is where contact incidents pile up. A contact incident in Turn 4 traffic during lap 20 can shape your entire race. That’s how quickly the margin disappears.

The iRacing Southern 500 is a 367-lap race. Consequently, tire wear, clean laps, and patience on restarts matter more than outright pace. Stay in the race, and the finish tends to take care of itself.
