If you’ve driven the Cadillac V-Series.R GTP in iRacing recently, you may have noticed something odd. On long straights, the car seems to lose speed compared to other GTP-class competitors. It’s not subtle, either. Drivers have reported watching BMWs and Porsches pull away mid-straight, even when drafting or running similar setups.
The issue has sparked a lot of discussion in the iRacing community. Some think it is a Balance of Performance (BoP) problem. Others suspect it is tied to the hybrid system or aero modeling. Here is what we know and what you can do about it.
What Drivers Are Seeing
The reports are fairly consistent. The Cadillac accelerates well out of corners and feels competitive in the mid-range. But once you’re at full speed on a long straight, the car hits a ceiling earlier than the BMW M Hybrid V8 or the Porsche 963.
At tracks like Daytona, Le Mans, and Spa, this becomes a real problem. You can lose tenths or even a full second on a single straight. Over a stint, that adds up fast. Drivers running multi-class events have noticed the gap is large enough to change race strategy.
Possible Explanations
Drag coefficient and aero modeling. Every GTP car has a different aerodynamic profile. The Cadillac’s bodywork generates a specific drag-to-downforce ratio, and if that ratio is slightly off compared to real-world data, it could explain the top speed deficit. iRacing builds aero models from manufacturer-supplied data, so small differences in how that data translates into the sim can have a big impact.
Hybrid deployment mapping. The GTP class relies heavily on hybrid energy systems. How and when the car deploys electric power matters a lot. The Cadillac’s deployment curve may taper off at higher speeds, while other cars continue to push hybrid energy through to the top end. This is one of the harder things to tune, and it varies by track.
Balance of Performance tuning. iRacing uses BoP adjustments to keep the GTP cars competitive with each other. These adjustments include power limits, weight, and aero restrictions. If the Cadillac’s BoP settings are slightly conservative, that could explain the straight-line gap. BoP is an ongoing process, and it’s possible a future update addresses this.
Is It a Bug or a Feature?
This is the big question, and the honest answer is: we don’t know for sure. iRacing hasn’t issued an official statement on the Cadillac’s straight-line performance as of this writing. It could be an intentional BoP decision, a side effect of how the hybrid model is configured, or a genuine data issue in the aero model.
In real-world IMSA racing, the Cadillac has been competitive on straights. That doesn’t automatically mean the sim version should match, since iRacing and real-world BoP operate independently. But it does give the community reason to ask questions.
What You Can Adjust
While you can’t fix the underlying car model, there are setup changes that can help close the gap on straights.
Reduce rear wing angle. Trimming out some downforce will lower drag and improve top speed. The tradeoff is less grip through high-speed corners, so you’ll need to find a balance that works for each track.
Optimize fuel map settings. Running a leaner fuel map on straights (if the track allows it) can free up a bit of extra power. Some drivers switch maps between corners and straights for maximum efficiency.
Manage hybrid deployment. Pay attention to your hybrid settings and when the car deploys energy. You may be able to configure the deployment to push more power at higher speeds rather than out of slow corners. Experiment with different maps during practice.
Check tire pressures. Higher tire pressures reduce rolling resistance and can add a small amount of top speed. Just be careful not to go so high that you lose grip everywhere else. Small adjustments of 1-2 psi can make a difference.
Where Things Stand
As of now, the community is watching and waiting. Several well-known setup builders and content creators have flagged the issue publicly, which usually gets iRacing’s attention. The development team regularly reviews telemetry data and community feedback as part of their ongoing BoP process.
If you’re running the Cadillac in official races, the speed drop is something to plan around rather than fight against. Pick your battles on track, focus on corner speed and tire management where the car is strong, and minimize time lost on straights through smart drafting and setup adjustments.
The Cadillac V-Series.R is still a competitive Cadillac GTP iRacing option. The straight-line gap is real, but it does not make the car unraceable.
