iRacing fuel strategy has always required either mental arithmetic, a spreadsheet, a dedicated app like Crew Chief, or trusting a spotter. Season 3 adds a native solution: a built-in fuel calculator widget with real-time consumption data, strategy projections, and a pit window display. No external tools required.

What the iRacing Fuel Calculator Does
The Fuel Calculator is a drive-screen widget that gathers consumption data during the race. Specifically, it begins tracking after either 5% of the race time has elapsed or 10 minutes have passed, whichever comes first. Before that threshold, it waits rather than generating unreliable projections. Once active, it processes consumption across five configurable calculation modes: Last Lap, Last 10 Laps, Session Average, Minimum Lap Usage, and Maximum Lap Usage. Each mode gives a different picture of your fuel burn. The right choice depends on how consistent your lap times are and how much track conditions are shifting your consumption.
From those base modes, the widget calculates a range of displayable values: usage per lap, laps remaining to empty, fuel at end of race, fuel required to finish, projected pit stops, last stint fuel requirement, and a configurable target usage. You choose which values to show. The widget scales from a minimal one-number display to a full strategy overlay, depending on your preference.
Pit Window and Green-White-Checker
The pit window visualization is one of the more practical additions. A progress bar fills as the race progresses. It changes from orange to green when you enter the pit window, based on current fuel load and consumption. The vertical lap indicator turns white when you are inside the window. This means you do not need to calculate the window manually or ask your spotter. You can see at a glance whether stopping now is a viable strategy call.
The widget also handles green-white-checker scenarios. You can configure a number of expected GWCs. When set, the calculator shows two parallel sets of values: one for the base race distance, and one with the GWC extension added. Values with the GWC margin appear in parentheses. If you set the number of GWCs to zero, the extended values disappear. This is particularly useful in oval racing, where overtime is common and fueling short for a double-file restart is a legitimate strategy call.
Team Racing and Configuration
The Fuel Calculator works in team sessions, making it relevant for endurance racing. The widget is available on both the driving and session screens. Co-drivers and coaches can therefore monitor the same data without switching views. Additionally, a per-widget liters/gallons toggle lets you change the fuel display without adjusting your overall unit settings. The fuel calculator has its own setting within the widget editor.
To enable the widget, open the Widget Editor in the sim via Alt+K and toggle it on. Configuration options for each calculation mode and displayed value are found within the editor. The widget is off by default and completely modular. If you already have a fuel workflow you are happy with, nothing forces you to use it.
Third-party tools like Crew Chief and SimHub have offered fuel strategy features for years. They will continue to do so with more depth and customization than the native widget provides. However, for drivers who want accurate, real-time fuel math in the sim without managing extra software, this solves the problem cleanly. Set it up once, and it runs every session.
