On December 6, 2021, iRacing launched the Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance as part of the 2022 Season 1 build. This marked a historic moment for the sim, bringing one of Formula 1’s most dominant and technologically advanced cars into the hands of sim racers worldwide. It was the first time iRacing had partnered directly with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team to deliver a contemporary F1 car.
A New Benchmark for Open-Wheel Content
The arrival of the W12 raised the standard for modern open-wheel content in iRacing. The car represents the pinnacle of hybrid-era engineering, powered by a turbocharged 1.6L V6 engine paired with an advanced Energy Recovery System (ERS). The seamless integration of ERS, Drag Reduction System (DRS), and ultra-detailed aerodynamics allows drivers to experience Formula 1 machinery with unprecedented accuracy.
Integration Into iRacing
- Series Placement: iRacing Grand Prix Series, Custom Hosted Sessions, and Time Trials.
- Technical Systems: Full ERS management, DRS zones, and hybrid battery deployment modeled.
- Audio & Visuals: High-fidelity engine sounds and one of the most detailed 3D models ever introduced to iRacing.
The W12’s release not only expanded iRacing’s open-wheel catalog but also demonstrated the sim’s growing presence in the official Formula 1 landscape. For many members, it was the first chance to experience the full complexity of a current-generation F1 car within the sim.
